Sergeant

What the rank does

Section commander in the combat arms, shop supervisor in a technical trade, and often a platoon second-in-command. Sergeants do the detailed training — the part of soldiering that turns a qualification into competence. It is the first rank where administration starts to outweigh the trade itself.
