Royal Canadian Navy

Explore Canada's maritime force, from its coastal formations to ships, submarines and the people who operate and support them.

How it is organized

A simplified guide to the main parts and how they relate. Expand an item for context; this is not a complete operational chain of command.

Naval headquarters and coastal formations

The Commander of the RCN directs the Navy through Naval Staff Headquarters. Maritime Forces Atlantic, Maritime Forces Pacific and the Naval Reserve are the three formations described in the Navy’s organization guide.

Fleets, ships and submarines

The Atlantic and Pacific fleets contain ships and submarines with different roles. A ship’s internal organization should be read separately from the Navy’s shore command structure.

Working aboard a ship

Departments bring together areas such as operations, engineering and logistics. Watches organize duty over time. A watch is a working arrangement, not another headquarters in a national command chain.

Naval Reserve and training

Reserve divisions and training establishments have distinct roles in preparing and supporting naval personnel. Explore the Reserve guide for service options and confirm opportunities with the unit.

What the Navy operates

Browse this site’s selection by role. Each entry retains its own status; a replacement programme is not equipment already in service. Counts describe entries in this reference, not fleet readiness.

Trades of the Navy

Start with occupations tagged only to this environment in the site’s dataset, or switch to include shared occupations. These categories describe the listings, not where a member will necessarily be posted.

Ranks and pay

Every rank in the Navy alongside its equivalents in the other two elements, with the incentive pay levels inside each range.
