Understand military compensation

See how base salary, occupational pay scales, allowances and deductions fit together before reading a pay figure as take-home income.

Gross base pay is the starting point. Allowances, adjustments and deductions affect the amount deposited. This guide does not estimate personal take-home pay or determine eligibility for a benefit.

Explore a rank, scale and increment

Example only: the tool starts at Corporal. Choose a rank, then an applicable pay scale and increment. These are gross figures before deductions, not a personal pay assessment.

Regular Force / Reserve Class C monthly figures from the existing site dataset, effective 1 April 2025. Rank names below use Army equivalents; the rank table shows all three elements. Read the scale notes before choosing a specialist rate.

Figures reuse the site’s pay-increment data rather than introducing a second rate table. Confirm applicable current rates in the official monthly pay tables. For Class A/B daily rates, use the Reserve guide.

What changes the total?

Rank and increment

The published scale has rates for the rank and applicable increment. A promotion, increment change or rate revision can change base pay. Use the complete table and the conditions that apply to you.

How military pay works

Specialist scales

Some occupations have separate scales. A job title alone is not enough to establish an entitlement: read the relevant table and eligibility rules. Choosing “Pilot” or “Legal” here is a comparison, not a pay decision.

Allowances and benefits

Duty, posting and personal circumstances may affect which allowances or benefits apply. They should be checked separately from the base-pay table.

Housing differential

CFHD has its own eligibility rules, locations and pay levels. A gross salary figure on this site does not establish that a member qualifies or calculate their payment.

Deductions

Pay statements distinguish earnings from deductions, including applicable income tax, pension contributions, CPP/QPP and employment insurance. Other deductions can also appear.

Compensation updates

Effective dates and payment dates can differ. Review current implementation details for compensation changes rather than adding announced amounts to every pay example.

A practical pay-statement check

  1. Confirm the period and service class. Do not compare a part-month or daily-rate payment with an entire month of salary.
  2. Confirm rank, scale and increment. Use the correct occupational table and effective date.
  3. Read adjustments and allowances separately. Retroactive payments can make a single deposit unrepresentative.
  4. Review deductions. The remaining deposit is not the same thing as the published gross salary.
  5. Ask about a discrepancy. Serving members should use their chain of command or Orderly Room with the relevant statement and dates.
